Cape Cod Canal Visitor Center
Millions of people cross the bridges over the Cape Cod Canal each year. But how many know what this engineering marvel is all about?
The Cape Cod Canal Visitor Center offers excellent insight into the rich history, fascinating features and vigilant operation of the Cape Cod Canal. Visitors of all ages are welcomed to explore our many interactive displays. Join us to captain a virtual boat ride through the Canal. Encounter a retired 41-foot US Army Corps of Engineers patrol boat. Select different radar and camera images of the Canal to locate vessels in the waterway. Investigate what’s inside many of the ships that transit the Canal. View films on Canal History, Canal Critters, and Canal Wildflowers that play continuously throughout the day. Discover the many recreational opportunities along the Canal. Or, just relax and soak in the waterfront views from the rocking chairs on our front deck.
US Army Corps of Engineers Park Rangers staff the Visitor Center, providing information and answering questions about the Cape Cod Canal and its recreational opportunities. They also offer various interpretive programs. Call or visit the website for complete details.
The Cape Cod Canal navigation project is operated and maintained by the US Army Corps of Engineers. The main mission of the Canal is to provide a safe navigable waterway for vessels of all types and sizes, saving an average of 135 miles of coastal travel around the tip of Cape Cod. In addition to the navigation mission, more than 3 million visitors each year enjoy the wide variety of recreational opportunities offered on Federal lands along the Canal.
On going scheduled programs at the Visitor Center and along the Canal:
July – October Programs include: Guided tours through the Visitor Center, Junior Ranger Program, Canal Kids Program, Beach Exploration, East Boat Basin Tour, and Sagamore Hill Hike.
Special evening programs are offered on Wednesdays and Thursdays in July and August at the Visitor Center at 7pm. Topics vary.
